The Chincoteague Ponies will face off against the Holly Grove Christian Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Chincoteague took a loss when they played away from home last Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They came out on top against Snow Hill by a score of 10-0 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The Ponies might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matches by ten runs or more this season.
Meredith Wright was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Anslyn Greenwood, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Chincoteague was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. They are 3-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Holly Grove Christian beat Nandua 15-12 last Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Eagles.
Sophie Daniels and Ella Powell did most of the damage at the plate: Daniels got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Powell got on base in four of her six plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and one double. Powell is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Samantha Porter, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Holly Grove Christian's win bumped their record up to 4-2. As for Chincoteague, the victory got them back to even at 4-4.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Chincoteague hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .332. However, it's not like Holly Grove Christian struggles in that department as they've averaged .436. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Chincoteague's way against Holly Grove Christian when the teams last played on April 1st, as Chincoteague made off with an 11-1 win. Do the Ponies have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
