Basketball Recap: Northwest Takes a Tough Playoff Loss

Despite a phenomenal run in the regular season, Northwest couldn't carry that success into this playoff game. They fell 75-64 to the Maize Eagles on Friday. The Grizzlies were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Eagles earlier this season, when they won 85-69.

Northwest lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was River Peters, who posted 16 points and five steals. Those five steals gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Liam Calvert, who scored 13 points.

Maize's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alan Hanna led the charge by shooting 88% from the field on his way to 18 points in addition to seven assists and seven boards. Hanna is on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 55% in the last eight games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ty Willits, who went 6-for-8 en route to 18 points and three steals.

Northwest has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 16-6 record this season. Maize is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.

Northwest does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Maize, they have already played their next game, a 49-48 victory against Shawnee Mission South on the 12th.
