Recap: Lovington Wildcats vs. Silver Fighting Colts

It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but the Lovington Wildcats had no problem doing just that on Saturday. They enjoyed a cozy 45-26 victory over Silver. Winning may never get old, but Lovington sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.

Lovington's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Wyatt Gomez, who threw for 302 yards and five touchdowns while completing 92.6% of his passes. Demarcus Thompson was another key contributor, gaining 128 total yards and three touchdowns.

Lovington's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB 5.5 times. Leading the way was Thompson and his 2.5 sacks.

Lovington's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-3. It's not like the team was facing easy opposition over that stretch either, as it included 11-1 Portales and 8-4 Espanola Valley (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 64% over those games). As for Silver, their loss ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-3.

Lovington will head out on the road to face off against Portales at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in New Mexico (Portales is ranked ninth, while Lovington is ranked seventh). Silver does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
