Baseball Recap: Pike Central Chargers vs. Mt. Vernon Wildcats
Pike Central had lost ten straight at home dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped their record down to 4-15 to make it 11. They fell just short of the Mt. Vernon Wildcats by a score of 7-6. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Chargers of the 4-3 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.
Pike Central saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Noah Meece, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. Kody Carter also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
As for Mt. Vernon, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-13 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games.
On Mt. Vernon's side, Luke Weintraut was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off nine hits. Weintraut has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Mt. Vernon is 3-1 when Weintraut posts two or more runs, but 3-12 otherwise.
In other batting news, Jack Campbell was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Tristan Rumley, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
Pike Central and Mt. Vernon are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Chargers will face off against North Posey at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mt. Vernon, they will challenge Vincennes Lincoln at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
