Softball Preview: Napa Grizzlies vs. Wood Wildcats

Napa and Wood are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Napa Grizzlies will host the Wood Wildcats at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Napa has given up an average of 11.2 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.

Napa lost 13-5 to Fortuna on Friday. The Grizzlies have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Priscilla Morgado Rodriguez was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She struck out 13 batters over 7.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 6.3 strikeouts per game. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in RBI.

In other batting news, Courtney Mayer and Izzi Chae did some serious damage despite the final result: Mayer scored a run while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances, while Chae scored a run while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Wood waltzed into their game on Thursday with five straight wins... but they left with six. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Bears a 10-0 shutout. Give the Wildcats' pitching crew some credit: that's the team's fourth straight shutout.

Not much got past LillySue Rants, who gave up just two hits and racked up ten Ks to keep Concord off the board. Rants has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Karly Sampson was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Lily Anderson, who went 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.

Wood was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .412. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Concord only posted a batting average of .100.

Wood pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 9.8 runs. As for Napa, their loss dropped their record down to 1-3.

Napa beat Wood 10-6 in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Will Napa repeat their success, or does Wood have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
