Basketball Recap: Shanel Sutton's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cape Fear over Lumberton

Cape Fear lost against Lumberton back in December of 2024, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The matchup between the Cape Fear Colts and the Lumberton Pirates didn't end well, with the Cape Fear Colts falling 59-42. While losing is never fun, the Colts can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 244th, while the Pirates are ranked 118th).

Cape Fear's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Shanel Sutton, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards. Sutton is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in each of the last 15 games she's played. Elisabeth Kirkland was another key player, putting up 13 points.

Cape Fear has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 9-11 record this season. As for Lumberton, the win (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 16-8.

Cape Fear didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 51-40 victory against Gray's Creek on the 14th. As for Lumberton, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 46-33 loss against Purnell Swett on the 14th.
