Vermillion hasn't had much luck against West Central recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Tanagers will welcome the Trojans at 4:00 p.m. Vermillion is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.5 runs per game this season.
Vermillion proved they can win big on Monday (they won by 18) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Gayville-Volin 5-3.

Dylyn Wagner made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 16 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned runs off seven hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 6.2 strikeouts per game. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kara Chapman, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was her first of the season.
Meanwhile, West Central faced Madison in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Trojans never let the Bulldogs get on the board and left with a 3-0 win.
Not much got past Linzie Hoff, who gave up just a hit and racked up ten Ks to keep Madison off the board. Hoff has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.
At the plate, West Central's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Maddy Kunzweiler, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
The win got Vermillion back to even at 5-5. As for West Central, their victory bumped their record up to 9-6.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Vermillion hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. However, it's not like West Central struggles in that department as they've averaged .356. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Vermillion couldn't quite get it done against West Central in their previous meeting back in June of 2025 as they fell 4-1. Can the Tanagers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
