Football Recap: Mcallen Memorial Piles Up the Points Against Rio Grande City

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Johnson, McAllen Memorial was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They claimed a resounding 49-14 victory over the Rio Grande City Rattlers. The Mustangs' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead McAllen Memorial to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kane Coy, who threw for 152 yards and three TDs, and also rushed for 85 yards and one touchdown. The dominant performance also gave Coy a new career-high in passer rating (156.3). Another back making a difference was Braxton Speights, who rushed for 183 yards and one score on only 12 carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: McAllen Memorial was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 442 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 219 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

The win got McAllen Memorial back to even at 2-2. As for Rio Grande City, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Looking ahead, McAllen Memorial will head out to challenge Mission at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs will be up against the Eagles' rather soft defense (which has allowed 34 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Rio Grande City, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Palmview at 7:30 p.m. The Lobos' defense has only allowed 12 points per game this season, so the Rattlers' offense will have their work cut out for them.
