Softball Recap: Avenal Beats Mendota for Their Third Straight Victory

Avenal had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Mendota Aztecs by a score of 8-3. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Buccaneers also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2024.

Khloe Nieto was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. What's more, she posted four strikeouts, the most she's had since back in May of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.

In other batting news, Lauryn Lucero was incredible, going 3-for-4 with five stolen bases and two runs. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games she's played. Natalia Gonzalez also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.

Avenal's record now sits at 14-4-1. As for Mendota, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 4-16.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Avenal will challenge Tranquillity at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Mendota, they will take on Firebaugh at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Aztecs are facing the Eagles at the right time seeing as the Eagles are stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
