Final 2013 MaxPreps Texas Top 25 high school football rankings

There are 245 Class 5A football teams in Texas and only one — the Allen Eagles — went through the 2013 season without a loss.

Not surprisingly, Allen is No. 1 in the final MaxPreps Texas Top 25 of 2013.

The Eagles of Tom Westerberg put the finishing touches on a 16-0 season in style, overwhelming 14-2 Pearland 63-28 Saturday afternoon at Arlington's AT&T Stadium for its second consecutive Class 5A Division I state title. The largest crowd to watch a high school football game in Texas, 54,347, saw it.

Allen extended its winning streak to 27 straight games.



Playing in the Class 5A Division II state final after Allen‘s win, Katy had a chance to go 16-0 and enter into the No. 1 discussion. But the Tigers made several uncharacteristic mistakes in the second half. Cedar Hill (14-2) leaped on those mistakes and overcame a 14-point deficit for a 34-24 victory.

The defeat ended a 31-game winning streak for Katy (15-1) and its hopes of a repeat state title, which would have been a UIL record-tying eighth. Only Celina and Carroll (Southlake) have won eight state titles.

Westerberg said he wasn't concerned where Allen would land in national polls, but he pointed to the difficulty of his team's schedule that included victories over DeSoto, Carroll (Southlake), Cedar Hill, Coppell, Pearland and Spring Westfield (Houston). All six occupy spots in Texas Top 25 with a combined record of 75-10 (75-4 excluding losses to Allen).

1. Allen 16-0 (Last Week 1)
Junior Kyler Murray threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and added 188 rushing yards in a 63-28 victory over 14-2 Pearland in the 5A-I final played before a state record crowd of 54,347 at AT&T Stadium. Cole Carter and Jalen Guyton had two TD catches, Chad Adams scored twice as did Jaelen Barlow. Cory Miller and Jaylon Jones each contributed interceptions and Allen's Christian Sam was the game's defensive MVP.

2. DeSoto 14-1 (3)
The title of best team not to win a state championship definitely belongs to the Eagles. DeSoto was so close, leading Allen by 15 points with nine minutes to play in a 5A-I state semifinal, only to see it slip away, 42-35.

3. Cedar Hill 14-2 (6)
The Longhorns capitalized on some uncharacteristic Katy second-half miscues for a 34-24 victory in the 5A-II state title rematch. Trailing 24-10 in the third quarter, the Longhorns reeled off the game's final 24 points. Xavier Washington led a determined defense with nine tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble that set up the go-ahead touchdown. Aca'Cedric Ware led the Longhorns with 124 rushing yards and a touchdown. Damarkus Lodge scored twice, finishing with 129 combined yards. Cedar Hill lost to Katy in the last year's final, 35-24. Cedar Hill's losses were to 16-0 Allen and 14-1 DeSoto.

4. Aledo 16-0 (4)
The Bearcats became the nation's first team to score more than 1,000 points in a season in their 38-10 victory over 14-2 Brenham in the 4A-II championship game before 33,745 Saturday at AT&T Stadium. Junior Luke Bishop threw for 157 yards and three touchdowns and added 133 rushing yards. Taco Anderson had four catches for 95 yards, two going for touchdowns. Linebackers Jordan Mittie and Tyson Mauser made touchdown-saving plays and led the Bearcats in tackles. The state title is the fourth in five years for Aledo.

5. Katy 15-1 (2)
The Tigers were well on their way to a record-matching eighth state football title, leading 14-2 Cedar Hill 24-10 in the third period of the 5A-II championship game. But two fumbles and a muffed punt snap fueled a 34-24 Cedar Hill victory. Katy capitalized on Cedar Hill fumbles to reel off 21 points in the final 3:22 of the first half. After Rodney Anderson's 66-yard touchdown run, Garrett Doiron connected with Sloan Spiller on a 44-yard score and JoVanni Stewart added a 77-yard fumble return for a score. The powerful Katy rushing attack, held without a touchdown in the second half, was limited to 167 yards on 43 attempts. The defeat ended Katy's 31-game winning streak.

6. Trinity (Euless) 11-3 (7)
The Trojans proved to be a tough out in the playoffs as usual, taking DeSoto to the wire before losing in the final six seconds of the fourth-round playoff, 48-41.

7. Coppell 9-2 (8)
The only losses on the Cowboys ledger were to Allen on the road and DeSoto in the final seconds of a 5A-I area playoff.



8. Carroll (Southlake) 11-2 (9)
After losing its opener to Allen, the Dragons strung together 11 straight wins before being eliminated 42-38 by Trinity (Euless) in the third playoff round.

9. Lake Travis (Austin) 12-2 (11)
The Cavaliers were within one win of reaching its sixth state final in seven years, this one in Class 5A. Cedar Hill's 34-24 state title victory over Katy should take some of the sting out of Lake Travis' 19-10 state semifinal loss to Cedar Hall.

10. Pearland 14-2 (5)
Hayden Cole rushed for 88 yards on 18 carries and quarterback Connor Heath threw for 110 yards and two touchdowns, but the Oilers couldn't match the firepower of 16-0 Allen in a 63-28 defeat in the 5A-I state final. Justin Phillips took the football away from Allen quarterback Kyler Murray and returned the fumble 85 yards to set up one touchdown and Conner Chidester made a 58-yard interception return to set up another score.

11. Cy-Fair (Cypress) 12-2 (10)
The Bobcats' blueprint for wins revolved around playing great defense. Pearland matched Cy-Fair's defense, winning the 5A-I Region III title game 10-3.

12. North Shore (Houston) 12-1 (12)
After an impressive string of 12 straight wins, the Mustangs could manage only one touchdown in a 9-7 third-round elimination by Cy-Fair (Cypress).

13. Lamar (Houston) 11-1 (13)
Momentum from a 5A-I state final appearance in 2012 helped carry the Redskins to an 11-0 start, but Pearland ended Lamar's season with a 21-13 third-round ouster.



14. Manvel 12-2 (14)
The Mavericks advanced to the fourth playoff round in just their second season in the 5A ranks before being dispatched by Katy.

15. Westfield (Houston) 13-1 (15)
The Mustangs' unbeaten season ended in a fourth-round loss to Allen. That's one round more round than the prior season.

16. Martin (Arlington) 10-3 (16)
In a season of ups and downs, including three forfeits that were later overturned, the Warriors were a third-round playoff victim of DeSoto, 56-34. Defensive end Myles Garrett, a Texas A&M pledge, was named the winner of the Landry Award for the best player in North Texas.

17. Madison (San Antonio) 11-4 (17)
Cody Ennis' passing arm had the Mavericks on the verge of a state semifinal upset of Pearland until a kickoff return in the final two minutes of a 38-34 loss.

18. Skyline (Dallas) 11-2 (18)
The Raiders carried the Dallas ISD banner to the third round, but a double-overtime 55-48 loss to Spring Westfield (Houston) spelled elimination.

19. Guyer (Denton) 14-2 (21)
Jerrod Heard, a Texas Longhorns commit, led the Wildcats to victory in their second straight 4A-I state title game, 31-14 over Brennan (San Antonio). Heard rushed 22 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns. He completed all nine of his passes for 95 yards and a third score. D.j. Breedlove and David Haynes scored touchdowns for the Wildcats. Guyer lost just once on the field in its opener at 5A-DII state champion Cedar Hill. The other loss was a forfeit due to an ineligible player in a game Guyer had won by three touchdowns.



20. Johnson (San Antonio) 12-3 (19)
The Jaguars took down some of the top San Antonio programs, but Katy ended the 5A-II playoff run.

21. Steele (Cibolo) 12-2 (20)
The Knights were eliminated in the 5A-II fourth round by Johnson (San Antonio) 42-41.

22. Ennis 14-1 (25)
The Lions' only blemish was a 29-6 state semifinal loss to 16-0 4A-II state champion Aledo. Nobody played the Bearcats any closer.

23. Highland Park (Dallas) 13-2 (24)
The only losses for the Scots were to 4A-II state champion Aledo in the opener and to 4A-I state champion Guyer (Denton) in the state semifinals.

24. Brennan (San Antonio) 15-1 (22)
The Bears allowed only 51 points in their first 15 games to reach the 4A-I state final. But defending champion Guyer (Denton) gave Brennan a dose of its own medicine in a 31-14 victory Saturday at AT&T Stadium, holding the Bears to 268 total yards. Da'Shawn Key (17 carries, 127 yards) accounted for both Brennan touchdowns on runs of 11 yards in the second quarter and 37 yards in the fourth. Guyer's time of possession was nearly twice that of Brennan. Bears' linebacker Grant Watanabe, a Colorado pledge, was named defensive MVP of the game with six solo tackles and seven assists.

25. Brenham 14-2 (23)
Coach Glen West had his defense crowd the line of scrimmage in an effort to slow down high-powered Aledo. Aledo was held to only a field goal in the first 19 minutes. Eventually, Aledo connected on some big plays in a 38-10 win over the Cubs in the 4A-II title game. Caleb Hill threw for 216 yards and the only Brenham touchdown, a 70-yard flea-flicker to TreVonte Johnson.
