Football Recap: Derby Comes Up Short

Derby had lost four straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-2 to make it five. They came up short against the Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic Yellowjackets, falling 29-6. Having soared to a lofty 35 points in the game before, the Red Raiders couldn't push the score so high this time.

Abner Barillas-Rivera threw for 81 yards on five of 19 attempts. Quincy Carter was his top target, picking up 56 receiving yards. On the ground, Brooklyn Fernandez rushed for 74 yards.

Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-2. The victory continues a trend for them in their matchups with Derby: they've now won three in a row.

Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Owen Riemer, who rushed for 80 yards and one TD on only seven carries. Cole Linnen was in the mix too, providing the Yellowjackets with two scores.

Looking ahead, Derby will face off against Wolcott at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Gilbert/Northwestern/Housatonic, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against Naugatuck at 7:00 p.m.
