Kolten Alvarez produced another solid performance rushing for 94 yards and one touchdown on only nine carries, while also throwing for 170 yards and one TD on only 15 passes. His longest rush was for an impressive 55 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. 84 of Alvarez's passing yards were hauled in by Cade Aelvoet.
They were just one part of a punishing run game: Hondo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 204 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 204 rushing yards in three consecutive contests.
Special teams also played a big role in the game for Hondo, adding 18 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Layton Pope, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, you're bound to get a positive result if you outscore your opponent every quarter and that's exactly how it played out for Crystal City on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that they blew Poteet out of the water with a 55-12 final score. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Javelinas had established a 36-point advantage.
Crystal City's win came from a few key players Hondo will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Adrian Zavala, who rushed for 260 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 16.3 yards per carry, and also picked up 70 receiving yards. Zavala is crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 120 every time he's taken the field this season. Another player making a difference was Christopher Mena, who threw for 306 yards and four TDs while completing 77.8% of his passes.
Crystal City didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Felix Luna and Nick Flores.
Hondo's record is now 6-1. As for Crystal City, their record now sits at 7-0.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Hondo has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 217.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Crystal City struggles in that department as they've been averaging 326.6 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Hondo skirted past Crystal City 25-22 in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was the Javelinas' Eric Garcia Jr., who rushed for 160 yards and one touchdown. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Owls still be able to contain Garcia Jr.? There's only one way to find out.
