Softball Recap: Markesan Comes Up Short

Markesan had lost four straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped down to 4-9 to make it five. They fell just short of the Westfield Area Pioneers by a score of 14-13. The Hornets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Pioneers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.

Kaylee Heberer stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she fired off two home runs and five RBI while going 3-for-5. Another player making a difference was Karlie Olson, who went 2-for-3 with three runs.

As for Westfield Area, they now have a winning record of 8-7. The win made it back-to-back victories for they.

On Westfield Area's side, Natalee Meinke made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Meinke has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, Saydee Kohnke was a standout: she got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Izzy Nelson was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Markesan will look to defend their home field on Monday against Green Lake/Princeton at 5:00 p.m. The Tigersharks will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for Westfield Area, they will head out on the road to face off against Wisconsin Dells at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
