Basketball Recap: Southside Christian Takes a Loss

Southside Christian was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They received a blow as they fell 66-47 to the Christ Church Episcopal Cavaliers. While losing is never fun, the Sabres can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 152nd, while the Cavaliers are ranked 41st).

When it comes to explaining why Southside Christian lost, don't look at Owen Smith. Despite the final result, he went 6 of 14 on his way to 17 points. Those 17 points gave Smith a new career-high. Michael Sanders also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

Leading Christ Church Episcopal to victory were Anthony Atkins and Jonathan Perry. Atkins dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten assists, while Perry went 6 for 10 en route to 15 points and eight rebounds. Christ Church Episcopal is 13-2 when Atkins posts ten or more assists, but 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Reid Hipp, who went 5 of 8 on his way to 12 points and seven boards.

Southside Christian's defeat dropped their record down to 10-8. As for Christ Church Episcopal, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Christ Church Episcopal beat Southside Christian by a score of 51-48 on Friday.
