Softball Recap: New Plymouth Extends Winning Streak to Four

New Plymouth proved they can win big last Monday (they won by 24) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Melba Mustangs, sneaking past 13-11. The victory was nothing new for the Pilgrims as they're now sitting on four straight.

Makiah Weideman was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out seven batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Averi Albisu, who scored three runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-4. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lauren Ferreira, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

New Plymouth kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in four consecutive contests.

New Plymouth's record is now 13-4. As for Melba, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.

New Plymouth will square off against McCall-Donnelly at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Melba, they will take on Wendell at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Mustangs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Trojans have averaged an impressive 12.4 runs per game this season.
