Basketball Recap: Whitefield Academy Comes Up Short

If Whitefield Academy was feeling good fresh off their 68-35 takedown of Holy Cross last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Whitefield Academy Wildcats were outmatched by the Sacred Heart Valkyries and fell 61-32. The contest marked the Wildcats' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Defeat or not, Whitefield Academy got some senior leadership from Gwynnie Franz and Noel Smith. Franz posted 15 points, while Smith scored 13 points and six rebounds. That was a full 40.6% of Whitefield Academy's points, marking the third time in a row Smith has earned more than a third of the team's points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Sacred Heart to victory, but perhaps none more so than ZaKiyah Johnson, who went 7-for-14 to rack up 17 points and five assists. Johnson's evening made it 25 games in a row in which she has scored at least 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Bri Wilkins, who went 5-for-7 en route to 14 points and three steals.

Whitefield Academy's loss dropped their record down to 22-7. As for Sacred Heart, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 19 of their last 20 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 24-3 record this season.

Looking ahead, a feisty cat fight will be fought as the Wildcats face off against the Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Sacred Heart, they will be playing at home against Notre Dame Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sacred Heart is on a 20-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), Notre Dame Academy a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
