Football Recap: Make It Four in a Row for Lake Catholic

Lake Catholic took a 37-point defeat the last time they faced off against Benedictine, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Cougars had just enough and edged out the Bengals 6-3. Those six points were actually the fewest the Cougars have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.

One reason for the win was Lake Catholic's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Michael Barnes and Zach Povejsil, who racked up five sacks between them. Barnes also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with seven. Lake Catholic got some further help from Marty Loncar: he picked up a sack and made 20 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

The victory was the fourth in a row for Lake Catholic, bringing their record up to 4-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 9.3 points on average over those games. As for Benedictine, their loss dropped their record down to 4-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Lake Catholic will square off against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Cougars 13.4, the Royals 6) so any points scored will be well earned. As for Benedictine, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Lutheran East at 7:00 p.m. on October 3.
