Basketball Recap: Steward Beats Nansemond-Suffolk Academy for Their Sixth Straight Victory

Steward had won five straight games and Xavier Nelson did his part to make it six on Wednesday. The Steward Spartans strolled past the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy Saints with points to spare, taking the game 61-45 thanks in part to Nelson, who dropped a double-double with 23 points and 17 rebounds. The matchup was his third in a row with at least 15 points.

Lj Vaughan also deserves some recognition as he posted his first blocks of the season. Those two blocks gave him a new career-high.

Despite the loss, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy still got an impressive performance from Madden Gilliatt, who dropped a double-double with 28 points and 14 boards. That was a full 62.2% of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy's points, marking the third time in a row Gilliatt has posted more than a third of the team's points. KJ Pidgeon was another key player, putting up six points and eight rebounds.

Steward's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 19-6. As for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-8.

Steward wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 59-57 loss against Cape Henry Collegiate on the 15th. As for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, they have also already played their next game, a 67-55 defeat against Peninsula Catholic on the 13th.
