Softball Game Preview: Wirt County Tigers vs. Calhoun Red Devils

Wirt County has gone 8-2 against Calhoun recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Thursday. The Tigers will welcome the Red Devils at 5:00 p.m. Wirt County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.

Wirt County took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Wednesday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Hannan a 16-0 shutout. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last five times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Adi Smith made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs, eight RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-4. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Kinsley Nicolais was incredible, earning two runs and six stolen bases. Those six stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kylee Barker, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.

Meanwhile, after a string of three wins, Calhoun's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They came up short against Wahama, falling 15-6.

Wirt County pushed their record up to 8-13 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.3 runs over those games. As for Calhoun, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-14.

Wirt County skirted past Calhoun 2-0 when the teams last played two weeks ago. Will the Tigers repeat their success, or do the Red Devils have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
