Preview: San Clemente Tritons vs. Capistrano Valley Cougars
San Clemente is 7-0 against Capistrano Valley since October of 2014, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The San Clemente Tritons are on the road again and play against the Capistrano Valley Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on October 20th. Capistrano Valley took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on San Clemente, who comes in off a win.
Last Friday, San Clemente faced Mission Viejo in a battle between two of the state's top teams. San Clemente walked away with a 20-10 victory over Mission Viejo.
Aiden Rubin continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 238 yards and a touchdown while picking up 8.2 yards per carry. Rubin was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 56 yards. Max (fernando) gonzales got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Capistrano Valley unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak on Friday. They took a 37-22 bruising from Tesoro.
Tommy Acosta put forth a good effort for the losing side as he rushed for 55 yards and two touchdowns, and also threw for 196 yards and a touchdown while completing 87% of his passes. Acosta is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he's now punched in two or more in the last four games he's played.
San Clemente has been no stranger to the win column this season, as they've started out with wins in seven of their first eight matches, giving them a 7-1 record. Having lost for the first time this season, Capistrano Valley fell to 7-1.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's contest: San Clemente has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 224.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Capistrano Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging 177.1 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for San Clemente against Capistrano Valley in their previous matchup back in October of 2022 as the squad secured a 51-7 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for San Clemente since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
