Softball Game Preview: Mountain View Spartans vs. Homestead Mustangs

The Mountain View Spartans will challenge the Homestead Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Homestead took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Mountain View, who comes in off a win.

Mountain View is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Half Moon Bay an 11-0 shutout on Tuesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Spartans considering their one-run performance the contest before.

Allison Marcelino was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Marcelino was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Taja Buell and Caroline Kim did most of the damage at the plate: Buell scored three runs while going 2-for-3, while Kim scored a run while going 2-for-3. Kasey Spaulding was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Mountain View always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Homestead came up short against St. Ignatius College Preparatory on Tuesday and fell 7-4. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Cierra Hagan made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

Mountain View's victory bumped their record up to 3-7. As for Homestead, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-2.

Mountain View beat Homestead 5-1 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will Mountain View repeat their success, or does Homestead has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
