Softball Recap: Fairfield Mules vs. Mt. Vernon Rams

Fairfield extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 12-16 in the process. They lost 10-3 to the Mt. Vernon Rams. The Mules were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Rams apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2018.

Fairfield saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hunter Kirk, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

As for Mt. Vernon, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 11-9. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for their hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

On Mt. Vernon's side, Taylor DeSmith spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up nine Ks.

At the plate, Arwin Wilkey was incredible, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in May of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Paige Watson, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Fairfield will head out to challenge Odin at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mt. Vernon, they will challenge Carterville at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Rams 3, the Lions 1.6) so any runs scored will be well earned.
