Baseball Game Preview: Gloucester Dukes vs. Phoebus Phantoms

For the second straight game, Gloucester will face off against Phoebus. The Dukes will head out to challenge the Phantoms at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Gloucester has three straight wins, Phoebus has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

Gloucester's pitching crew heads into the match hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Phoebus with a sharp 11-0 victory. The Dukes not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since March 20th (when they won 12-0).

Brayden Scott tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Hayden Simmons and Colter Callis did most of the damage at the plate: Simmons went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double, while Callis went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most hits Simmons has posted since back in March. Trevor Richardson also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Gloucester kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Phoebus only managed three hits.

Phoebus' defeat dropped their record down to 3-11. As for Gloucester, their record now sits at 12-4.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Gloucester has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Phoebus struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
