Mercedes is 8-2 against Edcouch-Elsa since October of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the rust and duke it out at 7:00 p.m. Mercedes is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
While Mercedes' victory against Sharyland wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Tigers won a contest that couldn't have been any closer, slipping by the Rattlers 34-33. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Tigers have posted since September 13, 2024.
The match pitted two dominant signal callers against one another in Diego Bravo and Calvin Harris. Bravo had a great game last Friday and threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Harris was balling out in the loss, rushing for 92 yards and three TDs on only eight carries, while also throwing for 220 yards on ten of 24 attempts.
One reason for the win was Mercedes' imposing defensive line, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Jerrin Gonzalez, Aiden Reyes, and Noah Buenrostro, who each picked up one sack apiece. Another thorn in Sharyland's side was Gonzalez, who picked up a sack and made seven total tackles (4.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Edcouch-Elsa). They blew past Port Isabel 28-7 last Friday.
Mercedes better keep an eye on Jason Pena. He was instrumental in Edcouch-Elsa's win, rushing for 76 yards and one score, while also throwing for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Another player making a difference was Ayden Mercado, who rushed for 82 yards and one TD.
Edcouch-Elsa's victory bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Mercedes, their win bumped their record up to 5-0.
Mercedes ended up a good deal behind Edcouch-Elsa in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, losing 21-7. Will the Tigers have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check back here after the action for a full breakdown and analysis of the contest.
