Softball Recap: Morenci Wildcats vs. Chandler Prep Titans
Morenci had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. Everything went their way against the Chandler Prep Titans on Saturday as the Morenci Wildcats made off with a 13-3 win. Considering Morenci has won 15 games by more than seven runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Cameryn Woodall made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). Woodall has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive pitching appearances. Woodall was even better at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run, six RBI, and three doubles.
In other batting news, Alizabeth Aguilar and Kay'Leigh Blair did most of the damage at the plate: Aguilar went 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Blair scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Aguilar hasn't dropped below three RBI for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Tiara Jones, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
Like Morenci, Chandler Prep also got a great game from a two-way player: Kyra Tucker. On the mound, she pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Tucker was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs, and a stolen base.
In other batting news, Kate Westervelt was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
The victory (which was Morenci's fifth in a row) raised their record to 21-5. As for Chandler Prep, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-12.
Morenci will stay at home for another game and welcome Mohave Accelerated at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Mohave Accelerated is coming into the match with six straight wins on the road, so Morenci will have to stop a squad with plenty of momentum. Chandler Prep does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
