The Wyoming East Warriors are taking a road trip to square off against the James Monroe Mavericks at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Wyoming East is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.
Wyoming East will bounce into Tuesday's contest after beating Bluefield, who they had gone 1-8 against in their nine prior meetings. The Warriors were the clear victors by a 16-4 margin over the Beavers on Monday. Considering the Warriors have won 11 matchups by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Jarrod Phillips and Miken Smyth were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Phillips struck out nine batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Smyth pitched 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Phillips has been consistent: he hasn't given up a single walk in five consecutive appearances. At the plate, Phillips went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Smyth went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI. That's the most hits Phillips has posted since April 3rd.
In other batting news, Owen Biggs was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since April 5th. Another player making a difference was Gaige Cooper, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple.
Wyoming East kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in seven consecutive games.
Meanwhile, it may have taken nine innings to finish the job, but James Monroe ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against WestSide, sneaking past 6-5. The win was nothing new for the Mavericks as they're now sitting on three straight.
Kadyn Hines made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Hines was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs.
Hines wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Brycen Parker, who went 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Carson Koen was another, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs.
Wyoming East has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests. That somehow still isn't as good as their 16-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.6 runs over those games. As for James Monroe, they pushed their record up to 13-10 with the win, which was their third straight on the road.
Both Wyoming East and James Monroe just can't seem to miss. The Warriors have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.5 hits per game. However, it's not like James Monroe struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.1 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wyoming East was able to grind out a solid victory over James Monroe when the teams last played on April 1st, winning 4-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
