Basketball Game Preview: Westhope/Newburg Sioux vs. Surrey Mustangs

The Westhope/Newburg Sioux are taking a road trip to challenge the Surrey Mustangs at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. Westhope/Newburg has a tough task ahead: they'll enter the game with seven straight losses, while Surrey will come in with three straight wins.

Westhope/Newburg is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took a 64-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of North Prairie co-op [Rolla/Rolette]. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game two weeks ago (58), the Sioux still had to take the loss.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Macy Bryans, who went 7 of 17 en route to 19 points along with seven boards and three steals. She is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Laken Lee, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 14 boards.

Meanwhile, Surrey strolled past Nedrose with points to spare last Friday, taking the game 55-39.

Surrey's win came from a few key players Westhope/Newburg will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Ava Keller, who went 7 of 11 on her way to 15 points and five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Makya Gerding, who went 5 of 9 on her way to 13 points and six rebounds.

Surrey was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive matches.

Surrey's victory bumped their record up to 4-2. As for Westhope/Newburg, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-6.

Westhope/Newburg was taken down by Surrey 71-37 in their previous meeting back in December of 2023. Can Westhope/Newburg avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
