Baseball Recap: Volcano Vista Comes Up Short in High-Profile Game with Rio Grande

Volcano Vista faced Rio Grande in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. Volcano Vista fell 15-10 to Rio Grande. The Hawks were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Ravens apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Braydn Mazuranich and Noah Massey did some serious damage despite the final result: Mazuranich scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while Massey went 3-for-4 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one double. Those four RBI gave Massey a new career-high. Jaxson Baca also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Even though they lost, Volcano Vista was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .382. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .343 or higher in four consecutive contests.

With the loss, Volcano Vista broke their three-game winning streak and moved their record to 10-6. As for Rio Grande, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 7-5 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Volcano Vista will take on Piedra Vista at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Rio Grande, they will face off against Farmington at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
