League recap: Olive Branch tops Southaven to extend winning streak

6A Region 1 recap Sept. 26, 2012

Olive Branch extended the longest winning streak in 6A Region 1 this week by beating Southaven, 31-28. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.

Grenada was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from eighth to sixth in the league. The Chargers vanquished DeSoto Central 30-0 earlier in the week.

Grenada's dynamic duo of Payne Horan and Trey Bledsoe proved tough for the Jaguars to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Horan threw for 136 yards and three touchdowns and Bledsoe had 101 yards receiving. Quintell Young helped Grenada's passing attack out by catching two balls for 16 yards.

Byrekus "Jap" Payne was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 172 yards on 13 carries as Olive Branch defeated DeSoto Central. Samuel Craft also contributed to the rushing game with 164 yards on the ground.

6-foot-2 quarterback Horan of Grenada is the league leader in passing yards this season with 697. He has also thrown seven touchdowns. On the ground, Scott Samsel's team's Craft has rushed for 542 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is DeAndrea Harris. The South Panola star has 22 catches for 231 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between the Conquistadors and South Panola. Olive Branch enters the contest ranked second in the state, while the Tigers ranks sixth.

The Chargers moved up to 33 from 60 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Grenada was able to make the jump by beating Matt Wallace's team 30-0.
