Softball Preview: Coal City Coalers vs. Newark Norsemen

The Coal City Coalers will face off against the Newark Norsemen at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

On Tuesday, Coal City made easy work of Reed-Custer and carried off a 13-4 victory. Considering the Coalers have won 11 games by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Masyn Kuder made a splash while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched. What's more, she posted five strikeouts, the most she's had since back in March. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those doubles were her first of the season.

In other batting news, Coal City got a massive performance out of Addison Hodgen, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Those two doubles gave Hodgen a new career-high. Madalyn Petersen was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and three runs.

Coal City was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .410. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .367 or higher in three consecutive contests.

St. Bede typically has all the answers at home, but on Monday Newark proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Bruins, sneaking past 8-6.

Dottie Wood spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits and racked up nine Ks.

On the hitting side, Rylie Carlson was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one double.

Newark's win ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 11-14-2. As for Coal City, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-7 record this season.
