Baseball Game Preview: Newton Rams vs. Mount Vernon Mustangs

The Newton Rams will take on the Mount Vernon Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Newton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.3 runs per game this season.

Newton blew Archer out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Friday Archer got their revenge. The Rams fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 2-0. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Rams' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Caden Brown made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Newton is 6-1 when Brown posts two or more runs, but 9-10 otherwise. Kris Ross was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, Mount Vernon had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Wildcats an 8-0 shutout.

Newton's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-11. As for Mount Vernon, they now have a winning record of 10-9.
