Baseball Recap: Make It Seven in a Row for New Ulm Cathedral

New Ulm Cathedral came tearing into Thursday's match with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Springfield Tigers a 4-0 shutout. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 4-1 on Thursday.

Not much got past Jake Finstad, who gave up just three hits to keep Springfield off the board.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Elliot Schabert, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

New Ulm Cathedral hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in nine consecutive games.

New Ulm Cathedral's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-1. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Springfield, their loss ended a 17-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 13-2.

New Ulm Cathedral and Springfield should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Minnesota Rankings. The Greyhounds will face off against Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 5:00 p.m. on Monday with a big rank advantage (53 vs. 212). The two teams have allowed few runs on average (New Ulm Cathedral 2.3, the Chargers 3.6) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Springfield (ranked 27th) will meet Windom (ranked 179th) at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
