Football Game Preview: McAllen Memorial Mustangs vs. Harlingen South Hawks

The McAllen Memorial Mustangs will square off against the Harlingen South Hawks at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as McAllen Memorial comes in on seven and Harlingen South on three.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when McAllen Memorial and Palmview meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. The Mustangs snuck past the Lobos with a 26-21 victory. Given the Mustangs' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 287th, while the Lobos are ranked 652nd) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Jayden Soliz continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 198 yards and three TDs while picking up 8.3 yards per carry. Those three rushing touchdowns gave him a new career-high. Braxton Speights also helped out as he racked up 119 rushing yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: McAllen Memorial was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 330 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 330 rushing yards in five consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Harlingen South's game on Friday was all tied up 14-14 at the half, but luckily for them it didn't stay that way. They walked away with a 24-14 win over Weslaco East.

McAllen Memorial better keep an eye on Austen Shroyer. He was instrumental in Harlingen South's win, rushing for 160 yards and a pair of touchdowns while picking up 10.0 yards per carry.

McAllen Memorial's record now sits at 8-2. As for Harlingen South, their record is now 6-4.
