Game recap

Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.) saw its 24-point lead dwindle to 10, but still managed to hang on and upset Marist (Chicago, Ill.) 34-24 on Saturday.

The Redwings were up 20-10 at the half after taking the lead on a Porter Ontko touchdown run in the first quarter.

Benet Academy expanded its lead to 16 points entering the fourth quarter. BA scored two times in the third, including once on a touchdown pass by Jack Beneventi to Jack Euritt.

The loss came as a surprise for the Red Hawks, which entered the game ranked No. 5 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings for Illinois, while the Lisle school was ranked No. 40. Marist came into the game having won one of the past two games between the two teams.

MHS's Ian Woodworth played well. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown.

Aj Pascente stood out for the Redwings in the win. The senior wide receiver caught two touchdowns.

The victory will ease some of the sting of Benet Academy's close 17-14 loss to the Chicago school last season.

The defeat comes as a step back for Marist, which notched a 21-14 victory over Notre Dame in its previous outing.

Benet Academy (7-1) goes up against Joliet Catholic Academy in a East Suburban Catholic game matchup next week, while Marist (7-1) locks horns with Withrow in a non-conference game.
