Basketball Recap: Newington Comes Up Short

Newington suffered their biggest defeat since January 3rd on Friday. They lost 63-42 to the Southington Blue Knights. The Nor'easters were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Blue Knights apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.

Defeat or not, Newington got some senior leadership from Hope Romanello and Kendall Miller. Romanello almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds, while Miller went 5 for 10 on her way to 13 points along with five assists and five steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Romanello has scored all season.

Lily Cooper continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Southington, shooting 5-for-7 from long range and almost dropping a double-double on 19 points and nine assists. The dominant performance also gave Cooper a new career-high in three-point shooting accuracy (71%). Isabella Leggett was another key player, going 5 of 11 en route to 11 points.

Newington's loss dropped their record down to 11-7. As for Southington, their victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 17-1.

When Newington and Southington next hit the court, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. Newington will square off against Rocky Hill and their four-game winning streak at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Southington will try to stop Plainville's three-game winning streak when the meet at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
