Football Recap: Matawan Regional Huskies vs. Somerville Pioneers

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Matawan Regional walked away with it. They slipped by the Somerville Pioneers 14-13 on Friday.

Matawan Regional didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Kevin Auguste, Welman Crooms, and Alan Sparks picked up one apiece. Auguste got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Several Pioneers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Aidan Vesuvio-Bush, who rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown. Somerville also got help from James Hampton, who showed off his sure hands for 121 receiving yards.

Matawan Regional's victory bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Somerville, they moved to 8-2 with that loss, which also ended their six-game winning streak.

Looking ahead, Matawan Regional will venture away from home to challenge Seneca at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Golden Eagles will roll in looking for their fifth straight win, something the Huskies surely won't give up without a fight. Somerville does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
