Softball Game Preview: Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks vs. Goshen Central Gladiators

The Newburgh Free Academy Goldbacks will head out on the road to face off against the Goshen Central Gladiators at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. Newburgh Free Academy will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak dating back to last season.

On Wednesday, Newburgh Free Academy beat Pine Bush 8-5.

Samantha Williams spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on seven hits.

On the hitting side, Melissa Schulze and Liana Shaw did most of the damage at the plate: Schulze went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI, while Shaw scored two runs while going 1-for-2. The team also got some help courtesy of Camryn LeClair, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Goshen Central ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 4-3 win over Cornwall Central. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last eight times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Goshen Central's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Mia Antolino, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Newburgh Free Academy's record is now 3-0. As for Goshen Central, their record now sits at 2-0.

Newburgh Free Academy beat Goshen Central 10-6 when the teams last played back in April of 2018. Will the Goldbacks repeat their success, or do the Gladiators have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
