Oak Lawn is a perfect 10-0 against Argo since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Spartans will face off against the Argonauts at 4:30 p.m. Oak Lawn is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak.
Oak Lawn's last matchup with Nazareth Academy could've gone either way, but unfortunately the same can't be said for the pair's contest on Saturday. The Spartans came up short against the Roadrunners, falling 13-7. Even though they lost, the Spartans' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.2 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).
Oak Lawn saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Justin Canvin, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Argo was not the first on the board last Thursday, but they got there more often. They were the clear victors by a 13-1 margin over Thornton Fractional North. With that win, the Argonauts brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.
Matt Mateyack made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single hit in four consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing five bases while going 3-for-3. He is becoming a predictor of Argo's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 0-7 when he doesn't).
In other batting news, Argo got a massive performance out of Julio Ruiz-Bravo, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Ruiz-Bravo also put up a triple, which was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Dennis Gaytan, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Argo's victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 3-7. As for Oak Lawn, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Oak Lawn has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Argo struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Oak Lawn took their win against Argo in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 13-3 score. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Argonauts turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
