Volleyball Game Preview: Maloney Spartans vs. Newington Nor'easters

The Maloney Spartans will face off against the Newington Nor'easters at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Maloney sitting on 13 straight wins and Newington on five.

Maloney is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Connecticut's top teams: New Britain, who was ranked ninth at the time (Maloney was ranked first). The Spartans walked away with a 3-1 victory over the Golden Hurricanes on Friday.

Maloney had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first set, they turned around to win the next three. The match finished with set scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-21.

Newington had won six straight home games and Tristan Gorman did his part to make it seven on Monday. The Nor'easters were the clear victors by a 3-0 margin over Academy of Science and Innovation with plenty of help from Gorman, who had 17 assists and three digs. He has been hot for a while, having posted 17 or more assists the last 11 times he's played.

Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-19, 25-10, 25-15.

Maloney's record now sits at 13-0. As for Newington, their record is now 14-4.

Maloney skirted past Newington 1-0 when the teams last played back in April. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Nor'easters have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
