After state misses 2020 season due to the pandemic, Hornets go for their third state title since 2013.
The 2021 high school football season in Maine kicks off next week and MaxPreps has your look at the state's top teams. After winning the 2019 Class C state title — the entire state missed the 2020 season due to the pandemic — Leavitt (Turner) is back to claim the top spot in our preseason rankings.
The Hornets outscored opponents 504-147 en route to its third state title since 2009 and first since 2013. Leavitt scored 40 points or more eight times while pulling out its only single-digit win in the championship, a 30-24 victory over Maine Central Institute, which opens the season at No. 8.
Since going 2-7 in 2016, the Hornets have gone a combined 31-5. The 2021 roster is a mixture of experience — 16 seniors — and youth (19 freshmen, 12 sophomores) on a 61-man squad.
In addition to Leavitt, defending (2019) MPA state champions are Bonny Eagle (Class A), Marshwood (Class B), Libson/St. Dominic (Class D) and Mt. Arat (8-Man).
