Softball Game Preview: North Stanly Comets vs. West Stanly Colts

North Stanly is 1-7 against West Stanly since March of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Comets will welcome the Colts at 6:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

North Stanly barely beat South Stanly the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Comets' pitchers stepped up to hand the Rowdy Rebel Bulls a 9-0 shutout on Tuesday. Winning may never get old, but the Comets sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.

Meanwhile, West Stanly came tearing into Thursday's matchup with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.4 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Wolf Pack as they made off with a 13-1 win.

Madi Whitley made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Laney Tucker was incredible, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two). Another player making a difference was Kennedy Austin, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

West Stanly kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in seven consecutive contests.

West Stanly's victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for North Stanly, their victory bumped their record up to 10-4.
