Softball Game Preview: South Laurel Cardinals vs. Corbin Redhounds

South Laurel and Corbin are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2019, but likely not for long. The Cardinals are taking a road trip to take on the Redhounds at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. South Laurel is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.

South Laurel barely beat Estill County the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Cardinals' pitcher stepped up to hand the Engineers a 7-0 shutout on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory the Cardinals have posted against the Engineers since April 29, 2016.

Kenzie Williams was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over seven innings pitched. She has been consistent : she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on R Bretz, who went 1-for-4 with one home run. Audrey Likins also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Meanwhile, Corbin suffered their biggest loss since March 21st on Saturday. They lost 14-7 to Assumption.

South Laurel has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Corbin, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.

South Laurel was able to grind out a solid victory over Corbin in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 6-1. Will the Cardinals repeat their success, or do the Redhounds have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
