Softball Game Preview: Lewis County Minutemen vs. Robert C. Byrd Eagles

Lewis County and Robert C. Byrd are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Minutemen will host the Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Lewis County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.

Lewis County fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Doddridge County on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Bulldogs by a score of 6-5.

Brooklyn Oldaker spent all 7.2 innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Jaelyn Smith made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with one home run. Another player making a difference was Bailey Oldaker, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Robert C. Byrd). They never let Hampshire get on the board and left with a 26-0 victory on Monday. The win was some much needed relief for the Eagles as it spelled an end to their four-game losing streak.

Robert C. Byrd's victory bumped their record up to 13-16. As for Lewis County, their loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 12-10.

Lewis County couldn't quite get it done against Robert C. Byrd when the teams last played two weeks ago as they fell 6-3. Can the Minutemen avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
