Softball Game Preview: Fullerton Indians vs. Segerstrom Jaguars

The Fullerton Indians are taking a road trip to take on the Segerstrom Jaguars at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Fullerton's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Wednesday. They blew past Ocean View 10-0. Considering the Indians have won eight games by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Katelynn Mathews made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 17 over six innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Those two hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kaylyn Yi, who went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Abby Lee, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.

Fullerton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in four consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Segerstrom had to endure a five-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They put the hurt on Garden Grove with a sharp 12-4 victory on Wednesday.

Fullerton has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 19-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Segerstrom, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 11-12.

Fullerton beat Segerstrom 8-3 in their previous matchup back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Indians since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
