Football Preview: Wasco Tigers vs. Kerman Lions

The Wasco Tigers will challenge the Kerman Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Wasco is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They breezed past Righetti to the tune of 57-6. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Tigers' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 190th, while the Warriors are ranked 606th).

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Wasco to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jayven Hernandez, who rushed for 80 yards and one touchdown on only six carries, and also threw for 139 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 83.3% of his passes. The dominant performance also gave Hernandez a new career-high in passer rating (163.2). Another back making a difference was Hammie Lopez, who rushed for 128 yards and a pair of scores on only five carries.

Wasco didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Righetti to a completion percentage of just 31.8%. The Tigers have been improving in that area: they had allowed a completion percentage of 0.64 earlier this season, but they've only allowed one of 0.64 in their last three games.

Wasco didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Nathaniel Regalado and Joel Nunez.

Meanwhile, after only 13 points in their last matchup, Kerman made sure to put some points up on the board against Tulare Western on Friday. The Lions put the hurt on the Mustangs with a sharp 41-20 win. The score was all tied up 20-20 at the break, but the Lions were the (much) better team in the second half.

Kerman's win came from a few key players Wasco will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Adrian Torres, who threw for 274 yards and five touchdowns while completing 77.8% of his passes. Jorge Antunez helped Torres out on the ground, rushing for 106 yards and one TD on only 14 carries.

Wasco has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-2 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 48.5 points over those games. As for Kerman, their win bumped their record up to 8-3.

Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Wasco has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 293.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Kerman struggles in that department as they've been averaging 150 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Wasco didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Kerman in their previous meeting back in November of 2016, but they still walked away with a 26-22 victory. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Lions' Sean Chambers, who rushed for 186 yards and a pair of scores while picking up 8.1 yards per carry, and also threw for 184 yards and one touchdown. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be easier for the Tigers to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
