Softball Recap: Highland Wins Going Away Against Whiting

Highland had won three straight at home, but on Saturday they bumped their record up to 7-2 to make it four. They were the clear victors by a 17-1 margin over the Whiting Oilers. The victory continues a trend for the Trojans in their matchups with the Oilers: they've now won five in a row.

Alyssa Niemann made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Niemann was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Highland got a massive performance out of Hailey Thomas, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Jordan Steele, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.

Highland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .654. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .333 or higher in three consecutive games.

Having lost for the first time this season, Whiting fell to 4-1. They were red-hot at the plate heading into the matchup (they scored no less than ten runs in the four contests prior), but Highland's pitchers proved too tough.

On Whiting's side, they saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Arianna Vianello, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Highland has already played their next game (against Illiana Christian), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Whiting, they will take on Calumet New Tech at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
