Softball Game Preview: Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders vs. Wakefield Wolverines

The Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders will head out to take on the Wakefield Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Cardinal Gibbons' pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. Everything went their way against South Garner as Cardinal Gibbons made off with a 21-0 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Crusaders considering their two-run performance the contest before.

Mallory Kelly was a standout: she scored four runs and stole a base while going 4-for-4. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in runs. Another player making a difference was Katie Scavone, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Cardinal Gibbons always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .634. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Garner only posted an OBP of .250.

Meanwhile, Wakefield faced South Central in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. Wakefield came out on top against South Central by a score of 7-4. With that victory, the Wolverines brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Wakefield got a massive performance out of Brenna Colleran, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4. Brianna Riehle also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.

The win made it two in a row for Wakefield and bumps their season record up to 5-1. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Cardinal Gibbons, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

Cardinal Gibbons beat Wakefield 9-6 in their previous meeting back in April of 2016. The rematch might be a little tougher for Cardinal Gibbons since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
