Baseball Game Preview: Walton-Verona Bearcats vs. Spencer County Bears

The Walton-Verona Bearcats will square off against the Spencer County Bears at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Walton-Verona's pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so Spencer County's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

It was a proper cat-fight when Walton-Verona took on Henry County on Sunday. The Bearcats had just enough and edged out the Wildcats 6-5. The victory continues a trend for the Bearcats in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won seven in a row.

Aidan Kerns made a splash while hitting and pitching. He pitched 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one run.

In other batting news, Kainan Held and Trever Bauwens did most of the damage at the plate: Held got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, while Bauwens went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Those three RBI gave Bauwens a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Spencer County came tearing into Sunday's contest with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Dragons with a sharp 12-5 win. 12 seems to be a good number for the Bears as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Spencer County's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 25-11. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Walton-Verona, their win bumped their record up to 20-13.
