Game recap

Zach Werlinger threw for six touchdowns as Basha (Chandler, Ariz.) defeated Gilbert (Ariz.) 42-14 on Saturday.

After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by Werlinger to Ronnie Querry in the first quarter, the Bears led 35-7 at the half.

Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 28 entering the fourth.

Taylor Malolo played well for the Tigers. He ran for one touchdown.

Coming into the game Basha had allowed 20.8 points per game this year. BHS held firm on the defensive front, and kept Gilbert right around the 13.6 points it had been averaging per game.

When the two teams played each other last season, the Chandler school came away with a 49-17 victory.

Gilbert (1-5) goes up against Marcos de Niza in a non-conference game matchup next week, while Basha (5-1) locks horns with Desert Ridge in a I Section II game.
