Softball Recap: Doherty Memorial Picks Up Sixth Straight Win on the Road

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Doherty Memorial and Notre Dame Academy meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Monday. The Highlanders came out on top in a nail-biter against the Rebels, sneaking past 3-1. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Highlanders also won the last time the pair played back in April of 2019.

Riley Cormier was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

Cormier wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Kursonis, who went 1-for-2 with one triple and one run. Another was Sarah DeFusco, who went 1-for-4 with one home run.

Doherty Memorial pushed their record up to 8-4 with the win, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.2 runs over those games. As for Notre Dame Academy, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-4 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Doherty Memorial will face off against Wachusett Regional at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Notre Dame Academy, they will challenge Leominster at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
